What is NSFAS?

NSFAS is a government entity under the Department of Higher Education and Training established according to the NSFAS Act (Act 56 of 1999) to provide financial support to disadvantaged students who wish to further their studies at public universities or TVET colleges.

Who qualifies for NSFAS funding?

  • All South African citizensAll SASSA grant recipients qualifies for funding
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  • Person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  • Students who started studying before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

Who should not apply?

Students who have completed a previous qualification.

Students with a combined household income of more than R350 000 per annum.

Students who have already applied, qualified and received funding. They are automatically funded for the duration of their studies provided they pass their modules and meet the academic requirements.

The following documents are necessary to apply for NSFAS 2023:

  • A copy of your ID or birth certificate is required.
  • Photocopies of your guardian, parents, or spouse’s identification
  • Proof of income or one year’s IRPS if required
  • SASSA grantees are not required to present proof of income.
  • Provide your own functional email address and a verified telephone number.
  • Students who have been identified as Vulnerable Children by the Department of Social Development must submit a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form.

How to register for NSFAS application form – NSFAS Registration application form

Applicants can go to the NSFAS website at www.nsfas.org.za to apply.

Click on the “myNSFAS” option at the upper right corner of the NSFAS homepage.

The myNSFAS page will appear with a welcome message. “Welcome to myNSFAS, the student portal.”

To Re-register your myNSFAS account, enter your username (email address) and password.

If you wish to register, please click the “Register” button. Before registering your profile, please confirm that you have a valid copy of your South African ID or an unbridged birth certificate copy.

Tick the box to authorize NSFAS to share the information you’ve supplied with third parties for verification and validation.

Then, type your ID number into the form exactly as it appears on your ID document.

In the area provided, enter your entire name and surname as they appear on your ID card.

Fill in your current email address.

Verify your email addressPlease provide your mobile number.

Make a password for yourself.

After that, you Password confirmationUpload a copy of your identification document.

Following that, please click on register to acquire a one-time pin.

An OTP will be issued to the email address and mobile number you supplied (this OTP will expire after 24 hours)

Enter the OTP and press the submit button.

Finally, your NSFAS Registration for 2023 is complete.

What is an appeal? – NSFAS Registration application form

An appeal is a request to review a decision not to fund a student who applied for NSFAS funding.

Who can appeal?

  • A student whose application for financial aid is rejected, or the financial aid for a continuing student is withdrawn , may lodge an appeal with the NSFAS.
  • The appeal decisions are subject to budget availability.
  • Appeals will only be considered for students who has applied to NSFAS for Financial Aid.

Who cannot appeal?

  • Students are not permitted to appeal if they:
  • Are registered for a qualification that NSFAS does not fund;
  • They have reached N+2 (or N+3 in the case of students with disabilities).
  • The student is a gap year student who NSFAS previously denied financial aid to because s/he did not meet the academic eligibility criteria.
  • The institution has not submitted their registration record to NSFAS or has submitted an incorrect registration record such enquiries should be directed to the institution.
