The objective of this system is to monitor and control the issuance of driving licences with a view to addressing the problem of fake licences which are the cause for many road accidents. This is because the system allows everybody to obtain any licence and drive any car one prefers.

However under the current system holders of driving licence of certain class will be obliged to drive only such a class upon which he was tested for and not otherwise. At the initial stage the applicant will have to undergo biometric measures and finger prints.

Motor cycles  

  • A – License to drive motor cycles with or without a sidecar and whose capacity exceeds 125cc or 230kg.
  • A1 –  Licenses to drive motor cycles without sidecar and whose capacity is less than 125cc or 230kg.
  • A2 – License to drive motor powered tricycles and quadricycles.
  • A3 – Licenses to drive moped whose capacity does not exceed 50cc.  

Private Vehicles                

  • B – License to drive all types of motor vehicles except motor cycles, commercial, heavy duty and public service vehicles.

Public Service Vehicles 

  • C – License to drive public service vehicles with seating capacity of 30 and more passengers in addition to the driver, Vehicles in this category may be combined with a trailer having a maximum authorized mass of not more than 750kg. Applicants must have held Class CI or E license for a period of not less than three years.
  • C1 – License to drive public service vehicles with a seating capacity of 15 but less than 30.Passengers in addition to the driver. Vehicles in this category may be combined with a trailer having maximum authorized mass of not more than 750kg. Applicants must have held Class D license for a period of not less than three years.
  • C2 – Licenses to drive public service vehicles with seating of four but less than fifteen Passengers. Vehicles in this category may be combined with a trailer having maximum authorized mass of not more than 750kg. Applicants must have held Class D license for a period of not less than three years.
  • C3 – Licenses to drive public services vehicles with a seating capacity of four or less passengers inclusive the driver. Vehicles in this category may be combined with a trailer having a maximum authorized mass of not more than 750kg. Applicants must have held a Class D license for not less than three years.

Commercial Light Duty Vehicles 

  • D –  License to drive all types of vehicles except motor cycles, heavy duty and public service vehicles.

Commercial Heavy Duty Vehicles 

  • E – License to drive all types of vehicles except motor cycles and public serves vehicles. Applicants must have held Class D License for not less than three years.

Track Laying Vehicles

  • F – License to drive truck laying vehicles steered by their trucks.

Farm/ Mine Vehicles

  • G –     License to drive farm or mine vehicles.           

Learners         

  • H –   Provisional license for learn

Conversion driving licence (Class A B D E F and G) – leseni ya udereva vip

The applicant will go to Police Traffic office with his old driving license

  • Must have a certificate of competence
  • The applicant must have more than 18 years  of age for motor vehicle and 16 years  of age for motor cycles

CLASS “C”CONVERSION

The applicant will go to Police Traffic office with his old driving license – Leseni ya udereva online (TRA Tanzania)

  • Must have a certificate of competence
  • The applicant must have more than 18 years for motor vehicle and 16 years for motor cycles PCV certificate from NIT or VETA
  • Applicant should specify the kind of motor vehicle he intends to drive
  • Applicant will be given a class of license based on his success.

Driving licenses rates are:

License fees renewable every 5 years – Tshs 70,000/=

Driving test fees – Tshs 3000/=

Provisional license fees renewable every 3 monhs – Tshs 10,000/=

  • Must have attended any recognized driving college and awarded a certificate
  • Must have more than 18 years of age for motor vehicles and 16 years of age  onwards for motorcycles
  • Must have a learner/provisional driving license
  • Must undergo test and pay test fee Must have an eye test certificate
  • Must have applied to Traffic police for testing
  • Must go to traffic police with a car for testing
  • Applicant having being tested may be allowed to drive motorcycles and saloon cars.
