After several consultations, it was decided during a conference on February 11th, 1964, at the East African Community Headquarters (then known as the East Africa Common Services Organization) that the United Nations would provide funding, equipment, and fellowships to establish the center. Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam was chosen as the location, and on August 30, 1965, EASTC officially commenced its operations.

EASTC’s vision has always been to foster a new generation of skilled statisticians capable of addressing the region’s data-related challenges. Over the years, EASTC has been at the forefront of statistical research and education, contributing significantly to the development of East Africa’s statistical landscape.
